Rachel Carson, Charles Darwin, Aldo Leopold, and Henry David Thoreau all used the power of observation, words, and art in personal journals to capture their studies of nature. They included not only scientific observations but creative poems and musings on the natural world.
Join us for two events exploring the use of a journal to capture your creative thoughts and personal observations about the nature around us. The beauty of journaling is there are no mistakes and no prior experience is needed!
Where: LOCAL Garden in Bath
When: July 12 at 4:00 – 6:00pm
Join KELT staff to design a journal, either from scratch using a combination of materials provided or by bringing your own special notebook. There will be examples of different journaling formats and techniques, resources to spark the imagination, and a plethora of natural objects to inspire ideas. No prior journaling experience needed! Light refreshments will be served.
When: July 15 at 10:00am to 12:00pm
Meet KELT back in the garden to explore the use of paint in nature illustration as well as to discover techniques to press and preserve plants, leaves, and flowers. Local artist and LOCAL Garden Coordinator, Laurie Burhoe, and KELT’s Operations Coordinator, Charlotte Thompson, will share tips and tricks in using watercolors to capture the essence of natural objects and organisms. Maine Master Naturalist Volunteer, Becky Kolak, will share simple, low cost techniques to press and preserve plants for a do-it-yourself botanical collection.
