  • New Bridge at Bonyun Preserve!

    In the spirit of an old time barn raising, a group of volunteers raised a new bridge across the Mill Cove Brook at Westport Island’s Bonyun Preserve!

    As a result of increased intensity rains and tidal action, the salt water marsh at the head of Mill Cove has eroded significantly, rendering a popular cedar bog bridge unsafe to cross. A new 30-foot long foot bridge was installed further upstream by a joint team of KELT volunteers, Westport Island Conservation Commission members and local residents.  On Saturday, October 8th, eight volunteers turned out to carry thru the woods and install six preassembled modules, some weighing over 300 pounds.  On Sunday a second team finished the installation and decked the bridge and opened the new trail segment  up stream,  bypassing the old bog bridge.
