Springtime Splendor for Amphibians: Vernal Pools of Lilly Pond Community Forest

When: Sunday, April 10 @1:00pm (changed due to the recent warmer weather)

Where: Lilly Pond Community Forest in Bath

Join KELT for an encore presentation of our vernal pool exploration workshop– this year held at the amphibian haven, Lilly Pond Community Forest! Explore the basics about vernal pools and learn how the state designates a vernal pool habitat. Be sure to listen for the chorus of affable amphibians looking for their springtime sweethearts.

Chainsaw Usage, Safety, & Maintenance

When: Saturday, May 21 @ 8:30am to 3:30pm

Where: Sewall Woods Preserve in Bath

Learn to use a chainsaw safely and effectively with veteran chainsaw user & teacher, John Cullen.

  • Limited class size- registration required by May 18th.
  • Register early by contacting Becky Kolak at 207-442-8400 or (no online registration).
  • Fee: $45
  • Will cover: Personal Protection Equipment (PPE), proper starting technique, proper filing technique, reactive forces of the saw, bucking, compression and tension (how not to bind up your saw), home owner maintenance, bore cut and open face notch, and tools of the trade.
  • All students must have a helmet with eye and ear protection, chainsaw chaps, and steel toed boots.
  • Some PPE will be available to share- spare helmet and set of chaps. Students are encouraged to bring everything and anything they have- saws, tools, files, anything-so that John can take a look and share ideas on equipment.
  • Snacks and water provided. Bring a bag lunch and water bottle.

  • John Cullen, retired from Bowdoin College and a teacher for nine years with the Certified Logging Program, has been cooking and heating with wood since 1979. Self taught with a chainsaw until he took formal chainsaw training over a decade ago, he was amazed at how much there was to learn even after 20 years of experience as a wood cutter and part time logger. John is active with MOFGA (Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association) in the Low Impact Forestry Program.

Bog Bridge Building Demonstration & National Trails Day Walk

When: Saturday, June 4 @9:30am

Where: Lilly Pond Community Forest in Bath

Celebrate National Trails Day with KELT by learning how to prevent wet feet and protect trails from erosion through the use of bog bridges. We will learn construction techniques and build much needed bridges along the Marshall Lane trail! If there is time and interest, join KELT’s Stewardship Coordinator on a guided walk afterward through the preserve– learn its conservation story, KELT’s approach to building trails, and fun forest facts about the property.
