July 13th and 20th: Battling Invasive Species!1108 IMG_0580

9am-12pm at Sewall Woods Preserve, Bath

Join KELT in the fight against invasive species at Sewall Woods where there are several areas that have been colonized by certain invasive species- bittersweet vine and honeysuckle have become especially bad. The goal for these workdays will be to cut and/or pull these plants before they go to seed later this summer. Volunteers will need a pair of gloves, sturdy footwear, and water (bug spray may also be a good idea).

RSVP with Byron Schuldt at steward@kennebecestuary.org or at (207) 442-8400.

Past Workdays:

June 11: Bog Bridge Construction

1pm-4pm @Morse Pond Preserve, Georgetown

Another huge need– bog bridges on the trail to prevent erosion and to keep hikers’ feet dry. The work will be relatively physical– carrying lumber for a mile before constructing the bridging at certain sites on the trail. With the work finished, a short interpretive walk of the preserve’s highlights will be offered.

May 28: New Trail Clearing

1pm-4pm @Morse Pond Preserve, Georgetown

Help with one of KELT’s biggest projects– the creation of a trail leading to Morse Pond! We’ll use loppers, pruners and hand saws to make way for the new trail. At the end of the workday, we will pick our way cross-country to Morse Pond and be the first to set feet on and assess the new route.

May 6: Trail Expansion

10am-2pm @Gamble Preserve, Phippsburg

We will improve and expand the trail at Gamble Preserve using rakes, loppers, pruners and handsaws. This preserve sits right on Carrying Place Cove- perfect for a scenic lunch break.
