Learn how to survey rockweed to gather important data for a community science assessment of rockweed along Maine’s coastline!
When: Tuesday, July 25 From 9Am to 12:30pm
Where: Dewick Farm in Woolwich
Join Schoodic Institute and KELT for a rockweed monitoring training and to learn about the intertidal zone! This event is great for middle school aged and older.
The training will introduce volunteers to rockweed and other common coastal seaweed species, and demonstrate the methods for monitoring it along the coast. Participants will leave with the skills to do their own monitoring at other locations!
The program is free and open to the public. This is a light rain or shine event; please come prepared with weather appropriate field gear, long pants, close toed shoes, and enthusiasm for learning about Maine’s rocky intertidal ecosystem! Registration is required, please register using the form below.
The community science rockweed survey is spearheaded by the Schoodic Institute. Their goal is to engage volunteers throughout the state to gather data about rockweed presence, density, and length from many sites along Maine’s coast, helping to answer the question, “How much rockweed is there?“ Rockweed is a type of seaweed that is commercially harvested in the state, and sustainable management requires knowledge of the total amount of rockweed throughout the state. Join the training to help gather this important data!
