Volunteer Opportunities

Help KELT in our mission to conserve, restore and instill appreciation of the land and water resources of the Kennebec Estuary to benefit today’s communities and future generations.

Nequasset Lake Alewife Fish Count

When: This is a seasonal volunteer opportunity. Sign ups usually begin around late April.

Where: Nequasset Lake in Woolwich.

What: Every spring, the alewives migrate to Nequasset Lake to spawn. Volunteers help us to count the fish that reach the lake each year. Volunteering takes two hours or less. Volunteers of all ages are invited to take part in this fun community science project!

Stewardship Workdays

When: Wednesdays 9am-12pm, April through November and occasionally throughout the winter.

Where: Locations and projects differ every week, check our events calendar and emails for more information.

What: Join our stewardship crew for a morning of trail building and upkeep. Past projects have included rerouting trails and building trail features such as stone steps, bridges, and new trailhead kiosks. We welcome all experience levels, but do ask that you are comfortable working outside in all weather conditions, and can do demanding manual labor.

Community Science

When: We have a wide variety of community science opportunities! Most of our offerings are seasonal and occur in the spring, summer, or fall. Time commitments vary greatly across programs.

Where: We conduct research all across the estuary!

What: At KELT, we’re excited to learn more about the Kennebec Estuary Region, and we love working with volunteers to help answer questions about the area. Our community science projects help us to support the habitats, fish, wildlife, and people in our region.

LOCAL Garden Workdays

When: Tuesdays 10am-12pm, from May through October. We typically begin workdays earlier in the day during hot summer months, so stay tuned in to the weekly email!

Where: LOCAL Garden is located at the corner of High Street and Lemont Street in Bath.

What: All experience levels are welcome! Bring a pair of work gloves and any gardening questions. Volunteers will join our Garden Coordinator Jaime to help plant, cultivate and harvest throughout the growing season. Feel free to help out in the garden on your time if you cannot make the workday!

Preserve Steward Program

When: We ask that Preserve Stewards visit their assigned property once a month, year round.

Where: Preserve Stewards will be assigned a property. If you live near a preserve and walk it often, this program is perfect for you!

What: Volunteer Preserve Stewards act as our eyes and ears on the ground, helping to take care of our lands and trails. Stewards are asked to frequently walk the trails of their preserve - noting any maintenance needs, safety concerns, and general observations. We host an onboarding event for folks that are interested in this program twice a year. Check out our events calendar to find out more.

Group Volunteer Events

When: Our stewardship team will work with you and your group to schedule a time that works best. Events will be held 9am-5pm, Monday through Friday. Our work is typically season (April-October) with limited options in winter months.

Where: We will match you to a preserve and project based on your team’s interests and our current stewardship needs.

What: Interested in hosting a group volunteer event with KELT? Fill out our inquiry form and our stewardship staff will get back to you!
