Led by Land & Stewardship Director Andrew Morgan, this stewardship project will not only aid us in the long-term maintenance of Thorne Head’s trails, it will also contribute to the overall sustainability of the forest! In recent years, Eastern hemlock trees have been severely affected by an invasive insect known as Hemlock woolly adelgid that lives on the tree’s needles and deprives them of nutrients. Thorne Head’s forest now contains many dead or dying hemlock trees, and we need your help to haul them from the woods and prepare them so that they can be utilized for trail stabilization, bridge work, and more.
This project will take place over three days this winter; come for any or all!
Day 2: Hemlock Log Peeling with Draw Shaves 101
Join us for this family-friendly workshop as you safely learn how to use a draw shave knife to debark trees! We’ll have a stack of salvaged hemlock poles to hone your skills on, and a bonfire and hot drinks for you to enjoy as you take in the view from the top of the Overlook Trail. Towards the end of the workshop, we will go on a short hike to see examples of how these logs will be used in trail maintenance— and you’ll be able to see the results of your hard work as you hike Thorne Head’s trails in later months!
Day 3: Final Log Peeling and Stacking
