Birding Extravaganza ~ Birding for Beginners

Conservation Organizations offer series of birding walks in the Midcoast Region

One of the joys of spring is the return of birds of all shapes, sizes and colors. Who doesn’t love stepping outside to a chorus of birdsong or catching a glimpse of bright red or yellow in the trees? To help you identify and learn more about our local birds, several conservation groups collaborate each spring to offer the Birding Extravaganza!

Advance registration is required. Visit the website for each organization for more information.

Birding for Beginners

Hosted by the Cathance River Education Alliance

This walk is for people who want to get a sense of what ‘birding’ is all about and explore whether they might want to get to know our feathered friends a little better. Two amateur birders will be your guide, sharing just a few tips on how to get started without overwhelming you. We’ll cover how to look and listen for birds, share a few useful birding tools, and walk to a variety of habitats looking for birds. This walk is intentionally scheduled in early spring before trees leaf out when it’s easier to see birds. Since many migrating birds will not have arrived, most of what we’ll see will be the ‘regulars’ – woodpeckers, titmouses, chickadees, nuthatches. The regulars are plenty of fun to watch as they go about their business – gossiping, foraging, scolding their neighbors, etc.
